At least eight security personnel got stuck under the snow on Monday after an avalanche hit Army position in the Siachen glacier, confirmed Army sources. The incident happened at the northern glacier where the altitude is over 18,000. Other Indian soldiers stationed nearby are carrying out search and rescue operations.
According to reports, a patrolling party consisting of eight security personnel was hit by an avalanche in the northern part of the Siachen glacier. The incident happened at 3:30 pm today and all the Army positions in the region remain covered with the snow.The security personnel are stuck under the snow and the Army is carrying out search and rescue operations at the incident site.Earlier this year in February, 10 Army jawans got trapped under snow after a huge wall of ice fell at an Army post in the Siachen glacier. The Army sent over 150 personnel to carry out round-the-clock search and rescue operations.
After hours of digging, the rescue team managed to find Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad who was stuck under snow at 19,500 feet. He was the sole survivor among the 10-man party that got stuck under the snow and he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
